The new ZWO AM5 N mechanism is an innovative mechanism because, unlike the equatorial mechanisms used in amateur astronomy, it can dispense with the familiar but heavy counterweights even for larger telescopes.
The load capacity of the new model has increased! Thanks to its so-called harmonic drive axes, adopted from robotics, it can move up to 15 kg of load without the use of weights.) By using a counterweight, the load capacity can be increased up to 20 kg (The manufacturer recommends using a maximum of 1 5 kg counterweight.) Since the mechanism has a self-weight of only 5.5 kg, it is an excellent touring mechanism for larger instruments. It can be used in azimuthal and equatorial modes.
The ZWO AM5 N mechanism is suitable for both Vixen and Losmandy standard prismatic tubes. For control, a simple hand control is included in the basic package, but it has full GOTO control via a mobile phone app, WiFi or Bluetooth. When standing on an object, its maximum speed is up to 6°/second. It can be powered by a 12 V mains adapter, gel battery with a minimum power rating of 2 A. Also new is the incorporation of a DC connector and a USB-C connector in the clutch of the mechanism, so that wiring is more convenient.
The manufacturer tests each AM5 N mechanic individually and issues a test report. Unlike the previous version, it is now only half as much, guaranteeing a maximum periodic error of only ±10", which can be well corrected using a lead of up to 0.5"-0.8". The drive design makes it almostcompletely zero backlash.
To move the mechanics, you can use the included joystick-style handheld controller, or a WiFi or bluetooth wireless over-the-air app.
Of course, the mechanics are compatible with the manufacturer's ASI AIR control system and have ASCOM (LX200 protocol) support. Under the mechanics, the manufacturer recommends its own extremely light but sturdy TC40 stand. Since the bottom of the mechanics is equipped with a standard 3/8" thread, it can also be mounted on other tripods.
