The ToupTek G3 664C colour camera is an ideal choice for solar, lunar and planetary imagers. Its high resolution and small pixels can capture stunning detail even at prime focus. The camera also performs well not only as a planetary camera, but for deep-sky imaging too, especially for compact objects such as galaxies, globular clusters, etc. Thanks to its ST4 port, it can also be used as a guide camera.
The camera uses SONY's modern, highly sensitive, back-illuminated IMX664 sensor. The 4 MP (2688 x 1520) sensor, measuring 7.84 x 4.45 mm, features 2.9 μm pixels capable of resolving very fine detail, making lunar surface features and planetary details clearly visible. Thanks to 12-bit colour depth and STARVIS technology, it offers a huge dynamic range and low noise, with high QE sensitivity of >91%.
The ToupTek G3 664C colour camera is the "golden mean" among Sony cameras with 2.9-micron pixels. It is recommended not only for capturing lunar, solar and planetary videos, but its wide field of view also makes it excellent for imaging compact deep-sky objects. The camera works particularly well with APO refractors, even at short focal lengths, but it is also ideal, for example, with the popular 200/1000 Newtonian using 3x focal length extension, as well as with other f/5 systems.
The product does not feature a built-in UV/IR-cut filter, making it extremely sensitive in the infrared range as well. A UV/IR-cut filter is essential when capturing colour images.
At its maximum resolution of 2688 x 1520 pixels, the ToupTek G3 664C colour camera can record at 126 frames per second (8-bit). Stable, high-speed data transfer is supported by the built-in 512 MB DDR3 memory buffer and USB 3.0 connection.
Numerous free image-capture software packages are available for download online. For Windows, we particularly recommend SharpCap and FireCapture, although the camera also works excellently with the manufacturer's own ToupSky software. The popular PHD2 software also supports the camera, while the ASCOM driver provides even broader device compatibility. The camera can be used with Windows, Linux and even Macintosh operating systems.
