Why is it good to use a binocular viewfinder instead of a "single-eye" eyepiece? Because humans are essentially "binocular" creatures, our brains can process spatial vision with both eyes in the best quality. The spatial experience is heightened in binocular viewing - especially when looking at the Moon and brighter celestial objects, we feel that they "float in space", almost three-dimensional.

How does it work?

The binoculars feature a prism that splits the incoming light into two - with the least possible loss and the most accurate ratio - and then transmits it to the eyepiece eyepieces. Even though only half the amount of light reaches each eye, our brain is able to combine the image seen by the right and left eye. The distance between the eyes is adjustable, of course, and requires two identical eyepieces.

Of all the models on the market, the Lacerta viewfinder offers above-average value for money - for the price you get prisms made from the BAK4 glass used in higher-quality binoculars, giving you clear, sharp, bright images. The special coatings (Fully Multicoated - FMC) on all optical surfaces transmit even more light, improving contrast and colour fidelity. They are also the reason to choose a better quality pair of eyepieces for the viewer, so that nothing at the end of the view degrades the quality of the image.

To use binoculars, because of their long light path, you need a sufficiently large focus adjustment. Almost all Cassegrain binoculars, and most binoculars with a lens (after removing the zenith mirror), provide this. Otherwise (e.g. Newtonian telescopes), a light path corrector is required. This does reduce the light path, so you can use our binocular viewer with Newtonian telescopes - but you have to take into account that it also increases the focus of the telescope (it behaves similar to the Barlow lens). For this binocular viewer, we recommend the 1.6x light path correctors.
