The Explore Scientific UHC (Ultra High Contrast) is a highly recommended general-purpose deep-sky filter. Its operating principle is quite simple: it transmits only specific wavelengths of the incoming light—precisely those at which the objects mentioned above emit radiation. Specifically, only the emission lines of excited hydrogen and oxygen reach the eye, while the filter blocks all other wavelengths. As a result, the contrast between the sky background and the observed object increases dramatically, making the nebula stand out from the background sky and revealing even faint details.
The filter can of course also be used from urban locations, helping to combat the diffuse background light caused by light pollution. However, it cannot replace a dark sky, so if observing faint deep-sky objects is your goal, it is definitely worth taking your telescope under dark rural skies.
